The construction of Indonesia's new capital "Nusantara" is accelerating, driving a peak in demand for steel structures and building materials.

2026-01-14

[Comprehensive News] With the full-scale advancement of Indonesia's national capital relocation plan, the new capital "Nusantara" in East Kalimantan is entering a phase of large-scale physical construction. Recently, the accelerated commencement of core government complexes, infrastructure, and pilot projects signifies that this "future green smart city" is transitioning from blueprint to reality. This has triggered immense demand for construction materials such as steel structures, cement, concrete, and glass curtain walls, presenting unprecedented market opportunities for related industries both within Indonesia and globally. The construction process is accelerating comprehensively, with core landmarks rising from the ground.

Since its groundbreaking ceremony in 2022, the construction of Nusantara has garnered significant attention amid global circumstances. Today, with the gradual availability of funding and optimized project approval processes, the pace of construction has noticeably accelerated. According to the latest updates from the Nusantara Capital City Authority, iconic structures including the presidential palace, office buildings for several key ministries, and the national mosque have fully entered the stages of foundation work and main structural construction. The site is bustling with numerous tower cranes and heavy transport vehicles shuttling back and forth.

"We are racing against time to ensure that the first batch of government institutions will be ready for relocation by the end of 2024 to early 2025," stated a spokesperson for the Authority during a site inspection. "Currently, we are concentrating our efforts on overcoming challenges in the core area's construction, where efficient and environmentally friendly steel structure buildings have become the preferred solution."

Soaring Demand for Steel Structures Leads Green Building Trend

As a planned "smart city in the forest," the construction of Nusantara places high importance on sustainability. Steel structure buildings, with their notable advantages such as short construction cycles, recyclable materials, excellent seismic performance, and reduced construction waste, strongly align with the new city's development philosophy. Consequently, they are being widely adopted in government office buildings, large-scale public facilities, and modern commercial complexes.

This trend has directly led to a surge in demand for steel structures. Major domestic steel manufacturers in Indonesia, such as Krakatau Steel, are operating at full capacity to meet the growing influx of orders. Simultaneously, the significant market gap has attracted top steel structure manufacturing and construction companies from China, South Korea, Japan, and other countries, who are actively participating in bidding and cooperation, bringing advanced technology and experience to Indonesia.

"The new capital's projects impose extremely high requirements on the quality, precision, and supply speed of steel structures," revealed an engineer involved in the project. "This represents not just quantitative growth but also a powerful driver for the technological upgrading of Indonesia's construction industry."

Building Materials Market Benefits Comprehensively, Supply Chain Faces Tests

Beyond steel structures, the new city's construction is generating robust demand for various other building materials. Procurement orders for products like high-strength cement, ready-mix concrete, energy-saving glass, exterior wall decorative materials, pipes, and cables are pouring in. While Indonesian domestic building material companies are entering a golden period of performance growth, logistics, transportation, and supply chain stability are simultaneously facing severe tests.

The existing industrial base in the East Kalimantan region is relatively weak, necessitating the transportation of large quantities of building materials from Java Island or via imports. Ensuring the timely, sufficient, and efficient delivery of materials to the remote construction site is a critical issue that contractors and government departments are currently coordinating to resolve. Analysts point out that this not only stimulates the building materials manufacturing sector but also significantly boosts the development of logistics, ports, and the transportation industry.

Future Outlook: Opportunities and Challenges Coexist

Analysts believe that the construction of Nusantara is a strategic national project strongly promoted by Indonesian President Joko Widodo. The resulting peak in demand for building materials is expected to last for at least 5 to 10 years. This not only presents vast business opportunities for related enterprises but also holds the potential to reshape Indonesia's economic geography and drive economic development in Kalimantan Island and across eastern Indonesia as a whole.

However, challenges should not be overlooked. Maintaining the original commitment to green environmental protection amidst the construction boom and ensuring the ecological environment remains unharmed; balancing the interests of local enterprises with those of foreign investors to achieve technology transfer and cultivate local talent; and guaranteeing supply chain stability and cost control—these are all issues that will require ongoing attention and resolution in the future.

It is foreseeable that as the future city of Nusantara rises bit by bit from the ground, Indonesia's "capital relocation dream" is materializing at an unprecedented pace. The economic ripples it is generating have only just begun to spread.
